Marriage Counseling

All marriages experience stress and difficulty on some level. Few of us are given the education about how to create a successful marriage. Many of us grow up believing myths about relationships, especially romantic ones.

  • S/he should know what I want.
  • If s/he loves me then I shouldn’t have to tell him/her what I want or need.
  • Love is all we need.
  • Individuals in marriages, who are truly in love, don’t fight.

There are many of these influencing our beliefs and unfortunately these myths create unrealistic expectations for the relationship. Marriage counseling provides education and helps the couple create healthy expectations and therefore stronger relationships.

The most common reasons people come in for marriage counseling are communication concerns. Either one or both persons does not feel heard by the partner. Impower Counseling Center assists all couples, heterosexual, homosexual, married and unmarried, in creating a style of communication that meets the needs of both people.

Marriage counseling allows both members to express his/her concerns and to be heard. The therapist works with the couple to discover both persons’ needs and assists the couple in having those needs met.

You may want to consider marriage therapy if:

  • You and your partner argue more than you would like.
  • There doesn’t seem to be a resolution to your disagreements.
  • You have the same fight repeatedly.
  • Either one or both feels unheard or misunderstood.
  • Would like to improve conflict resolution skills.
